Myrtleleaf padded through her forest, the light filtering through the leaves was cold and icy droplets of water fell from the sky and onto her coat. It felt familiar, like she had walked the territory on a day like this before. Then she walked into a clearing, where a towering tree stood crooked, dark against the paler sky. A white cat stood beneath it, dappled with grey like the storm. The cat's blue eyes turned to meet hers, wide in terror, and their mouth opened to speak but no noise came out. She had seen this day before. She had been here. She knew what to do. The ground began to suck at her paws, the rain turning the dirt to mud. She had to fight to stay standing. The sky let loose and the rain fell mercilessly in sheets, obstructing her vision. The white cat disappeared between her and the rain. She lunged forwards, but at the same moment there was an ear shattering crack and the tree started to close in on the ground. Faster and faster it fell. She didn't make it in time, and darkness swallowed both her and the other cat with a soundless crash. The leader awoke with a gasp, scrabbling on the moss of her nest to push herself up. It's not real. The adrenaline faded, and she was left staring at the inside of her den. The sky was grey outside, but the grey of night and not the grey of a stormy sky. She slowly settled back down, but she knew she was too jarred to go back to sleep. She was wide awake. Burnetroot lay beside her, so close yet so far away. She was dreaming peacefully, and Myrtleleaf didn't want to wake her. It felt cruel, selfish. What would Burnetroot want me to do? Her face settled into a frown as confliction warred inside her head. If I were in her position, I would be okay if she woke me. Still, she was unsure. The last thing she wanted to do was worry her mate. I want to wake her but she deserves a good night of sleep. I don't want her to be tired because of me. This is my problem... With a sigh, Myrtleleaf stood and padded out of the den. Maybe I just need some fresh air. She stopped on the ledge outside, between two of the roots that still clung to the rock. The night guard, noticing her, turned and curled their tail in a question mark. She lifted her tail and signed back that she was fine. The cat stared at her, eyes glowing, for a few moments longer before she saw them nod and return to their post. She stood there, breathing and thinking for a while longer. Time passed, and she couldn't tell whether it felt like it was speeding up or slowing down. There was no way she was falling back asleep. She would be tired tomorrow... but she wouldn't have to suffer through the rest of the night alone. Retreating back inside her den, she gently nosed some of the fur on her mate's scruff and flattened a few mussed up hairs with her tongue. "Burnet." She murmured, waiting for the other molly to stir before asking her question. "How do you feel about a little nighttime escapade, just you and me?"Tags: sea (and Aria for mention of Icemask) Notes: i know i told you this would be cute and carefree but the angst took me here |

- The Roots that Cluch -
The sweet scent of milk, the soft pitter-patter of tiny paws, the trill giggles and squeals as kits wandered about around her. Burnetroot often had dreams like these, dreams where everything when right in her life, int Myrtleleaf's life. Where their kits were alive and happy and healthy, wandering about the camp and causing mischief. Where Myrtleleaf still had that spark in her eye, the breath of life that Burnetroot fell in love with to begin with. That spark of life that seemed to be missing more and more as the days went by.
Burnetroot knew that this was a dream, how could she not? She knew that when she woke up there would be no kits, there would be no laughter. So she indulged in this moment, dreamscape concocted from her innermost thoughts. Thoughts she feared voicing to her mate. She wanted to, oh how she longed to speak to Myrtleleaf about making this a reality. The Mrytleleaf of her dreams looked absolutely beautiful with the glow of a queen, ethereal in the way only motherhood could bring. She knew that this would make her mate happy, but she also knew the pain of their loss still clung close to her heart, closing her off. So Burnetroot would hold her tongue.
Tongue, rough against her neck, pulling her from her dream. Burnetroot tried to hold on for a few more moments but the pull was too strong, bringing her back to the present with a soft call of her name. "Hmm?" she hummed, blinking away the remains of her reverie. It took her a few brief moments to come back down to earth, to adjust to the low lighting in the den and to process the words spoken to her. "Escapade? What are we, apprentices?" she asked, though she was clearly keen to the idea.
Any time spent with Mrytleleaf was time well used, in her mind. Add to that the fact that there was something troubling her mate and Burnetroot knew that she couldn't refuse. Not that she'd ever want to, of course. She rose from her nest and stretched her back, feeling the last dredges of sleep leave her body. With that settled she closed the distance between her and her mate, rubbing her cheek against the other in a show of affection. "What did you have in mind?"

A purr stirred in the depths of Myrtleleaf's throat as her mate replied with a snarky remark. Trust Burnetroot to always have something smart to say, even moments after waking up. "Yup, we're throwing it back." She answered, giving the tabby another rough lick on the cheek. I could use some good nostalgia. Back when they were apprentices, it was them against the world and they could never lose. Their sadness early on in life never stopped them, they were as bright eyed and bushy tailed as young squirrels. Now they were more hardened by time and circumstance, but they could still draw upon that old innocence... sometimes. And boy, if waking up your partner in the middle of the night to sneak out wasn't channeling your inner apprentice, she didn't know what was. The van molly stepped back to give her mate some room, and watched with a small smile as the red cat stretched. She knew she loved Burnetroot because of her personality, but boy it helped sweeten the deal when she was so strapping. Myrtleleaf couldn't compare. She had always seemed to retain a bit of kitten pudginess, no matter how much she patrolled or how hard she sparred. But she didn't mind, her mother had had a sweet round face like hers and she loved that she looked similar. Even though she was gone, her legacy continued on in Myrtleleaf. A pang of sorrow hit her, sinking her stomach to the floor. Legacy. Before the grief and regret could grip her body in merciless claws, Burnetroot butted her head against hers and spoke. Letting the touch of her friend ground her, she took a deep breath and felt as the feelings slipped away. I'm okay. They can't hurt me while she's here. The question caught her a little off guard. She hadn't thought about what they would do, thinking they would just make it up as they went along. She didn't care where they went, as long as Burnetroot was by her side. "Oh, just some wandering. It doesn't matter as long as we're together, you know." Myrtleleaf nudged the other cat's shoulder and led the way out of the den, tail standing high over her back. "Maybe we can head down to the grotto, but I know how much you dislike getting your paws wet." She teased, eyes twinkling. The grotto was a special place for many cats, including her. It was where she and Burnetroot had been wed, by the medicine cat before Mintheart, who she still missed so. It had been such a beautiful day. Not in the contemporary sense, as it had drizzled all day and the sky was grey and dull. But after they emerged from the waterside cave they spotted a rainbow arcing above the willows, and at that moment they all knew that the ancestors supported their decision. The weather hadn't stopped them, nothing could come between the love they shared. Not even thunderstorms and forest fires. Send your worst, and we will weather it all.Tags: sea Notes: they both got angsty dreams c': |
