Honeybee’s large paws tenderly padded around the roots of the medicine den. She tiptoed her way through the soft dirt at the bottom of the tree and made her way through the dark towards her gardens.
Out past dusk, the abnormally bright Daywalker was not in her natural element. Normally at this hour she would be asleep, snoozing until someone woke her to help them with some kind of herb-related task. Sore backs, thorns in the pad, even the occasional snake bite. She and the other medicine cats would take turns sleeping while the others resumed their mundane duties. However, tonight the tabby was wide awake. She had a job to do, and she was forced to wait until the hours of the night to do it.
The herb tender shivered, shaking her head as the cold breeze settled in. Her fur instinctively fluffed up to protect her from the cold but even that was not enough to stop her jaw from clenching against the wind. She had wanted to do this task during the day, when the sun was high and the bitter cold could not reach her, but when she requested an extra set of paws to help her tend to the gardens only two Nightwalker trainees were available. Even when Honeybee tried for kits, she was sad to realize that there were none to be spared.
Honeybee would have loved working with kittens. The energetic little tots could have dug faster and more than she would. They could have turned it into a game, whoever dug the most would get a prize! Honeybee only had herbs to offer, but she was sure she could mix up a treat for them. Instead, she had to work with trainees.
Not that she had anything against trainees, of course. The herb tender was friendly with everyone, even if they were so awkwardly close to her own age. She was the medicine cat apprentice herself only a moon ago, after all. She was still readjusting to the change. Being without her own mentor caused her some distress. It was so different. Maybe that’s why she wasn’t as enthused to work with the two as she would normally be. It reminded her too much of what she was missing.
Honeybee cleared her throat, standing still in the center of her little garden. It used to be much bigger, but sand coated most of her plants. The tabby looked sadly at where a young cactus used to be, now no longer salvageable. They’d have to take care while digging out certain plants, otherwise they’d risk getting pricked, Honeybee noted.
She looked up as two sets of paws hit the sand, approaching her. She looked at two dark pelts, squinting.
”Blackpaw, Scorpionpaw?” she called.
