The Past
Sunspirit, despite his name, was not born in DuneClan. In fact, he wasn’t born in any clan. He was born in the in-betweens to two, very young, ex-DuneClanners, who left the clan to strike out on their own after his mother’s father expressed his disdain for his father. They were young, stupid, and in love, and thought that leaving was the best option. So, under the cover of the night, they left and traveled towards the edge of the desert. They set up a den, and with the optimism that only two cats that are head over paws for each other could have, began to live their lives as loners, positive that this new life was absolutely perfect.
And for a while, it was.
His parents, Robin- and Dovesong lived quite comfortably by themselves, and it wasn’t long before Dovesong became pregnant. Ecstatic at this revelation, the pair decided that they should move even farther away from DuneClan, and started their trek through the in-between. Since there was no medicine cat, it wasn’t until Dovesong felt the squirming in her belly that she knew she was pregnant. This meant she started traveling a bit too late to make it to anywhere special.
About halfway through their trek, in the middle of a shrub land about a three moons walk from DuneClan, Dovesong gave birth to their son, who they named -name that will not be said (yet)-. -name- was Robin- and Dovesong’s only kit, but they didn’t mind. They had a son! Finding a den under a thick, strong shrub, the pair and their new son decided to live in this shrub land until their son was about four moons old. They dreamed about finding their own territory in a forest far away from DuneClan, raising their son and many more kits as both loners and warriors.
Unfortunately, they would never realize this dream.
When Sunspirit was two moons old, he was awoken by Robin- and was yanked out of the den. Then, all he could smell was smoke. This is his first memory.
While it is rather hazy, Sunspirit remembers his father grabbing him and bolting, only pausing once to yell out something. Sunspirit can’t remember what it was, because at that exact same time, embers leapt from a shrub somewhat close to the pair and onto the fur of his legs, scorching them and burning his skin, leading to the burn scars on his legs.
Robin- picked him up again, keeping the kitten as low to the ground as possible so that he didn’t have to inhale as much smoke. Sadly, this meant that Robin- inhaled a lot more smoke, and by the time they could see an area without foliage that they could rest at, he knew he was going to die.
Sunspirit vividly remembers telling Robin- excitedly that they were almost safe, but a few fox lengths before they reached the clearing, Robin- collapsed. He knew that Sunspirit was too young to survive on his own, and not knowing of any cats around, Robin- knew that Sunspirit would end up dying. And he knew that if he didn’t do anything, Sunspirit would be left to die a horrible death, and he knew what he needed to do.
Then, through the smoke, he saw a cat- one he vaguely recognized as an exiled DuneClanner who had left a while back with his cursed mate after it was discovered she was pregnant. Sunspirit, who was crying and tugging at his dad, remembers watching his dad stumble to his paws and pick him up and run towards the cat. He remembers being dropped as Robin- collapsed at the edge of the clearing, the movement catching the eye of a large tom.
The last memory Sunspirit has of his father, is him begging this random cat to take him in, and then, once the tom agreed, Robin- smiled and Sunspirit watched as his father’s eyes slipped closed and he took his last breath.
Everything between that moment and few weeks later is a complete blur, but after half a moon, the small ginger kit finally settled in with his new father and new foster siblings- a foster sister who looked just like his new dad and a foster brother who was mostly white. He vaguely remembers being hidden in a den with his adoptive brother as his adoptive father left to search for Sunspirit’s mother, completely unaware that, during the fire, Dovesong had gotten separated from Robin- and Sunspirit, and she spent four moons looking for him before she decided to start the long trek back to the original den.
It wasn’t long before she faded from Sunspirit’s memory, and before long, all Sunspirit knew was his adoptive brother and adoptive father. They spent the next four moons together, but then, he fell into a stream near the den. He almost drowned as he couldn’t swim, but he was rescued by his adoptive father. And that’s when his adoptive father realized he couldn’t care for kits on his own. So one day, he left Sunspirit’s adoptive brother and sister in the care of one of his friends, as he did not want to split the siblings up and he knew that Sunspirit’s adopted brother could never live in DuneClan, and led Sunspirit away from his home.
It was a bit of a trek, but one day, Sunspirit and his adoptive father reached the Sun Oasis, knowing that DuneClan would be there very soon. Then, he made sure to put mud over Sunspirit’s white markings, and then, after staying there with Sunspirit for a few days, he noticed DuneClan coming during one of his hunting trips, and knowing that Sunspirit would be rejected by them if they knew he was the one who was raising him, he ran.
A few hours later, Sunspirit, who had been told by his adoptive father that if he didn’t come back from a hunting trip to presume he was dead, was asleep in one of the dens he found near the oasis when a cat around his age woke him up. After going out of the den with this young tom, Sunspirit found himself being stared at by multiple cats. He had been found by DuneClan.
After a lot of debate among the cats, it was eventually decided that they’d take this kitten in, and once he was named Sunkit, Sunspirit found himself yelling at the leader that he wasn’t a kit, much to the amusement of some of the cats. He was quickly renamed Sunpaw and was deemed to be a Daywalker, which Sunpaw was incredibly confused by.
Luckily, the tom who had woken him up, Moonpaw, was there to explain. The black tom explained that he was a Nightwalker, which meant he hunted at night, while Sunpaw had just been named a Daywalker, so he would hunt in the day. Then, the pair started chatting happily and by the end of Sunpaw’s first day as a DuneClanner, they were best friends.
And then, a day later, the mud came off to reveal his white spotting. Instantly, Sunpaw was whispered about. However, due to how small the white spotting was, he was not considered cursed. Moonpaw ended up explaining this too, and he then had to calm Sunpaw down as the ginger tom was not very happy to learn about “cursed” cats. Still, he didn’t have anywhere to go, and he had Moonpaw to talk to, despite being of different roles.
Despite their different roles, the pair became incredibly close, spending their dawns and evenings talking together, completely ignoring how they were whispered about. The pair were once asked whether or not they were mates by another apprentice as an accusation, but they just laughed at this because, well, they weren’t.
When Sunpaw had finished settling in, he quickly found himself bothering a large, cream colored tom, who, after a bit of persuading, agreed to teach him. They didn’t have a very close relationship, as Sunpaw was expected to be perfect, but they got along fine, and after Sunpaw’s trial, he was giving the name Sunspirit because he is incredibly feisty.
From there, life has been pretty normal, with him going about his life and doing his duties, spending his daws and dusks chatting happily with Moonspirit.
He is completely unaware of the fact that his mother is still alive and he has a half sister, and he has no idea about the Nightwalker he’s about to meet.
Everyone but Robin- will be adopted out.
