A N T L E R P A W 317 words Antlerpaw awoke when a beam of sunlight shone on his face. He hadn't expected to sleep in this late and panicked a moment before remember it was his free day. The chance to explore and go out on patrols with whoever he wished was a nice change to the constant training with his mentor, who'd finally agreed to let him have a day to himself. He laid there for a moment not moving as he contemplated how to spend the little time he had. Unfortunately Antlerpaw wasn't really the type to sit and do nothing and the draw to at least get up and go for a swim or catch some mice forced the tom to lift his head and glance towards the entrance to the apprentice den.
There were still a few bodies filling the den, other late sleepers who would either suffer the wrath of their mentor or had the freedom like he did to do as they pleased; at least for the day. He did a quick scan of the group to see if either of his sisters were about but their familiar tortoiseshell and black-and-white pelts didn't stand out among the lumps surrounding him. Antlerpaw stretched and shook the moss from his pelt before giving his chest a few quick licks and yawning loudly. He usually started his day with a quick mental work up and soon he was done clearing his head so he could happily focus on the day ahead of him.
Antlerpaw took a step towards the light at the edge of the boulder that was the apprentice den, careful to avoid loose paws and tails. He'd done well skipping along the snoring bodies and was almost free before his back foot stepped firmly on the tail of a fellow apprentice. Antlerpaw paused before lightly picking up his paw and turning to see the face of who he'd rudely awoken. Seeking clarity

Houndpaw curled into a tighter ball, making himself look like a giant mound of black fluff. His large fluffy black tail curled around his face desperately trying to block the sun's rays and sink into sleep. Even if it was the young toms day off it was never that easy. The tom hardly got any sleep anymore, and if he did it was either light sleep or full of nightmares. It made him not want to even try to sleep anymore. Still though it wasn't like he could just stay here all morning, Foxpaw and Barkpaw wouldn't let him even if he wanted too. Once again he shifted in his nest, tossing a turning, trying different positions. Maybe he could somehow fall asleep? Just for a little. His tail slipped from his face and out of his nest, now using his large black paws to cover his eyes from the sun. 'theres no way sleep should be THIS hard' Houndpaw grumbled to himself, stuffing his face in moss. He shut his eyes, and let himself sink, sleeping would finally make him feel better. He was finally drifting off when a large paw stepped on his tail, making him spring up. "AAA!" He screamed, standing up and smacking himself on the roof of the den. "Gaahh!" he hissed, ducking his head and placing his paw where he had hit it. "Ow ow ow-" he meowed, feeling his face burn with embarrassment. He looked over at the apprentice that stepped on his tail. "....sorry..." he mumbled, trying to back away from the toms glare. "AAA!" Foxpaw snapped out of sleep, jumping up on all fours, his fur standing on end. "Whats going on?!" He hissed, his eyes still adjusting to the light. When he realized who it was, and what happened, he couldn't help but chuckle a bit. He loved his cousin, but he could be such a goof sometimes. He felt like he was always amused when he was around him. "It's okay Houndpaw, it happens to the best of us. Doesn't make it any less hilarious, though." He playfully brushed his tail on the other toms back, now glaring at Antlerpaw.
"You didn't see his fluffy tail? Ruuude." Foxpaw looked back at Houndpaw, his amused expression as clear as day. "I've stepped on it a few times, I'm surprised he's not used to it at this point. It's almost how I greet him these days. You know what? I might be jealous. Why are you letting all of these other apprentices step on your tail, brother?" He laughed, teasing in the way he always had done since they were kits.

A N T L E R P A W 260 words Antlerpaw blinked slowly as Houndpaw jumped up and yelled loud enough to wake the entire den full of apprentices. He continued to stare as the large apprentice rubbed at the top of his head were he'd smacked it against the top of the den. The tom squinted with mild confusion when Houndpaw actually apologized to Antlerpaw and opened his own mouth to return the sentiment before Foxpaw awoke to join them. "No need to apologize," he replied softly, aware that any more noise would probably wake the whole clan before too long.
Foxpaw's loud intrusion made Antlerpaw turn to the energetic tom with a dry look. "I assure you it wasn't intentional now if you'll excuse me, I was just leaving to get something to eat." Antlerpaw looked around the crowded den, hoping no one would scold him later for disturbing their sleep. It wouldn't really be his fault, Houndpaw and Foxpaw were far more vocal than he was being. Still; Antlerpaw was sure if he stuck around in the den much longer someone would point the paw at him for causing all the ruckus.
"Please, excuse me," he repeated as he turned to exit the den and get started with the day. He'd embarrassed himself enough by not watching where he was going and he was hoping it wasn't a sign the rest of his day was going to go.. not as planned.
As Antlerpaw reached the exit of the den, this time successfully not stepping on someone he remembered his intent to apologize to Houndpaw and turned to the other tom, "I um. Sorry," he managed to get out before turning to leave. Seeking clarity
