Clutching the precious gem in his paws, Gorsehoney held it under the water. With careful paws, he rubbed his pawpads around the gem in circular motions. He had to hold the gem carefully and gently. Even his soft and delicate pawpads could pick up dirt and scratch the gem. Gorsehoney would not accept imperfection of his gems. The water of the Underground lake was still and perfect for washing gems. Any current may snatch away Gorsehoney’s precious gems. Apart from small ripples in the water as blind cavefish swam around, the lake was silent. Dirt drifted off the gem and slowly dispersed into the lake. Gentle footsteps caught Gorsehoney’s attention. Peaking his eyes up but keeping a careful grip on his gemstone, he spotted a grand calico with gem-like blue eyes.
“Oh, it seems I’ve stumbled upon the rarest of gems. I must be the luckiest tom. Spottedgem, what brings you to the underground lake? I don’t suppose you’ve heard I was gem hunting. Many cats try to catch me on my way back from a hunt.”
Lifting his paw from the lake, he turned to her. His fur was still drenched in stale lake water that splattered on the cold cave floor with a rhythmic pop. Holding the gem between two claws, Gorsehoney held it up to his leader’s face.
“Looks like a diamond doesn’t it? Looks can be deceiving. It’s only a white sapphire. Still beautiful, but much less rare. Many cats would still die to have one. Yet as clear and smooth as it is, it fails to capture the beauty I see in the she-cats and toms of the clan. That’s the sad reality.”
He twirled the gem around, then set it down on a pile of cleaned gems. Most were common rubies or various quartz colours. Picking up another dirt covered gem from a separate pile, Gorsehoney continued washing while humming softly to himself.
