It was the night before DuneClan reformed for the rest of the trip. The skies were dark and grey. Clouds blocking out the moon and stars held a tantalizing promise of rain. However nothing would fall. It had been cloudy all day and all night, but the rain god held their gifts back. They were watching the clan go thirsty while they held a pool of water just out of reach. Every once in a while, Applewater would perk her head up after feeling a small tap that could have been a rain drop. But every time, she'd only imagined it.
Crouched over a baby cactus, Applewater held shaking paws. The sand had sucked out all of her poise along with the water in her body. She sat hunched like a gremlin. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn't stop the shaking. Her paws were so close to the cactus that every tremble caused her to bump it and add to a collection of spikes forming on her paw. Slowly, Applewater slid her claws into the cactus eager to harvest it's bounty however small.
A tom's voice caused her to jump and crush the plant in her paws. The small plant fell apart. Cactus water sunk into the many pinprick holes on her pawpads. Honeybee wouldn't be happy with her for so cruelly destroying a plant.
"What now Webwhisper!?" She snapped. Twisting her head, Applewater let out a grisly breath. She had expected the annoying black tom to come and tell her to go to sleep again, and although this cat had a similar black pelt there was an unmistakable white spot on his nose.
"Oh you're not Webwhisper. My apologies." Flicking her paw free of cactus juice and spikes, Applewater made a false promise to herself to get Honeybee to check her paws out later. "Moon…. Moonspirit is it?"
The tom was one of the few Nightwalkers Applewater knew the name of. It was hard to forget the distinctive moon-like white spot and the defiant attitude. Moonspirit and Sunspirit were a pair of cats to look out for. They sat on the border of breaking the rules. Every cat had their suspicions of the two's "relationship", but there was not enough evidence to punish them.
"Where's Sunspirit hm?"
