Russetfall - Tom - Chasmclan - Guard
Russetfall hurried to catch up with his fluffy white companion. She was smaller than him despite all her fluff and her pelt seemed to glow in the darkness compared to his dark reddish one. It was nightfall and Russetfall had been assigned to guard Lakebite while she hunted outside the caves. This was a serious job never taken lightly by the cats of Chasmclan. Predators were far more likely to pick off cats outside the caves than in. Inside they had the advantage but outside it was the predators world. The tunnel they padded through was widening and the natural light of the stars dappling the starpelt shone through.
Russetfall tried to hide his nerves. He'd yet to be assigned a guard job outside the caves. And the last time he'd been outside he'd had a near fatal accident. The scar on his chest an ugly reminder of that day only a few short moons ago. Shaking these thoughts from his head he forced himself to focus. If anything were to happen to Lakebite because he was worrying over his own stupid fears, he would never forgive himself. They were heading to the leaning tree where prey could often be found among the dead remains of an old tree. "Nice night for a hunt." He commented trying to calm himself with conversation. He'd never conversed with the hunter before. His golden eyes reflected the stars as he glanced sideways at her. She was older than him and rather pretty. He shook this thought off too, that would not help his nerves.

Lakebite was on the move, she tended to travel faster than one would expect for a small she-cat. She was ahead of her assigned guard tonight like she usually was, it wasn't like they were friends or anything. Some of the other hunters became close with their assigned guards but Lakebite wasn't like the other hunters she just wanted to do her job and hoped whoever she was stuck with just stayed out of her way, but also if needed fight of anything that might eat her. She was assigned to go out of the caves tonight and though she felt more comfortable inside the tunnels being trusted to venture outside the caves was always a treat to her. Blinking Lakebite was trying to adjust her eyes to the brightness of the outdoors. Inside the tunnels she relied on her nose and ears more than her eyes but outside always presented her weakness which is something she didn't like. But she showed no emotion as they moved towards the dead tree. She looked back and saw the russet form of Russetfall, much bigger than herself he seemed a bit nervous or on edge or something. Not like it mattered to her as it didn't affect her job in anyway. She just turned and came to a stop, opening her mouth she let the scents from the breeze tell her everything she needed to know. Thats when Russetfall spoke he was now along side of her. She flicked her pale amber eyes at him for a moment before looking away. "Is that so?" she said blankly. "I thought it was a nice night for guarding." She gave him a blank look before turning to the right and moving downwind from the tree. That would be the only way she could sneak up on anything. Russetfall - Tom - Chasmclan - GuardOuch, thought the tom eyeing the she-cat with a bit more uncertainty than before. Perhaps she just doesn't like small talk? Shaking off the comment he shrugged. "Right, well I'll be up there if you need me." He flickered his tail to the dead tree. It wasn't too high off the ground luckily for him and it gave the perfect lookout to protect the hunter. With that the young tom bunched his muscles and leaped. He landed solidly on the log and sinking his claws into the bark positioned himself with a good view of the area. He glanced back down to where the white she-cat had been. He wasn't sure she liked him very much. But he guessed in order to do his job that wasn't a requirement. Shrugging the thought off, he surveyed the night life around him. Bats danced in the starlight darting here and there. In the distance a coyote howled. The noise made Russetfall shudder. He'd heard stories of the beasts from the elders and some of the warriors. Nasty creatures much like dogs. Hoping he never had a run in with one, he listened closer to the night sounds. Little creatures rustled beneath his perch. A bird cooed in the darkness. A cool breeze tugged at his fur as he sat listening intently. He was starting to relax when a unfriendly scent wafted his way. Muscles tensing he glanced down into the undergrowth for Larkbite. He could just make out a splotch of white. Then a few rabbit lengths behind something else moving silently towards her. Dashing along the trunk he launched himself down into the underbrush. His claws unsheathing, his pelt fluffing up he landed on all fours between the predator and the hunter. Hissing and spitting he lashed out at a small red fox. The creature startled by his sudden appearance yelped in confusion. But it quickly recovered to snap angry at the tom. Deciding it wasn't worth the fight, the fox however turned tail and took off disappointed in losing out on an easy meal. Tags: @skiv OOC:

Lakebite flicked her tail signaling that she had heard the guard on his location. He could sit up there if he wanted to then he would stay out of her way. She crouched down slinking through the grass. Opening her mouth she let the scent of a mouse, she grinned her ears now perked to listen for the prey. She moved a bit further from the tree that Russetfall was perched on. She moved and finally she heard the rustling of the mouse a few tail lengths in front of her. She moved her legs under her body getting ready to pounce, her tail swished slightly above the ground as she waited for the perfect moment to strike. Shifting her legs one more time she pounce her paws landing easily on the mouse and she quickly snapped its neck with a bite. She placed let go of the mouse and put a paw on top of it. Even though she was sure it was dead she didn't want to have a bird or something else swoop down and grab her catch. Thats when she opened her mouth again to scent more prey except this time she smelt something different. It was a real musty smell and it was slight as she had a feeling she was downwind from her enemy. That scent only meant one thing. She looked over her should just as a red form landed in front of her. Spitting and fluffed up she looked past him and saw exactly what she was worried about. Fox her brain instantly went into defense mode. Hair rising over her back she arched her back trying to look as big as possible though she looked still quite small compared to Russetfall who was now launching an attack at the fox. Lakebite didn't know much about fighting but she did have to learn the basics as a Pupil. She got ready her claws slid out as she moved to ready herself if something happened to the guard. Though the fox seemed confused and surprised on the quick appearance of the tom. It finally turned and ran off, and she hissed as it ran. Though it was gone Lakebite didn't relax her fur as it was still fluffed up. She found her mouse and picked it up turning her gaze onto Russetfall she muttered "Thanks" She sure would have been injured if he wasn't there to jump between her and the predator.

Russetfall - Tom - Chasmclan - Guard
Russetfall felt relieved when the fox chose to turn tail. Though it had seemed to be a smaller, younger fox he still didn't like the idea of having a full on fight with it. So caught up in the rush of adrenaline that came with confronting the predator he didn't notice Lakebite's reaction until the creature fled. He turned to find the small white she-cat completely fluffed up in a defensive stature. She ducked down to scoop up a mouse and to Russetfall's surprise mewed a thanks. "Your welcome." He murmured, nodding his head he leaped back onto his tree trunk perch. His heart was still beating rapidly and he wondered if the fox had managed to scare off all their prey. Hoping this wasn't the case the young tom, forced his ruffled pelt to smooth back down. His senses once more on high alert for danger.
The night went on without any more fuss however. Russetfall feeling a bit stiff from sitting, paced the length of the tree trunk. Occasionally he would hear a rustle on the underbrush and quickly scan around only to find a mouse or other harmless creature. He was starting to get tired by the time the horizon turned orange and pink. Dawn was nearing, a sign to guard and hunter to head back to camp. Leaping down from his perch, Russetfall looked around for Lakebite. "Lakebite?" He murmured, his eyes scanning the dense underbrush he'd last seen her in. "We'd best get going, dawn is approaching."

Lakebite glanced out of the corner of her eye to catch Russetfall's reaction to her one word to him that wasn't rude this whole night. It was tough for her to get out and she didn't like to admit she really didn't know how to fight beyond the basics of defending and instinct from battle training before she was assigned to be a hunter. Most hunters were taught on how to escape and let the guard do the fighting, but with a predator like that fox there was no way if it wasn't so startled and weak willed would Russetfall be able to take it on by himself. She thought no so even though she would have gotten yelled at in training for not booking it up the nearest tree she wished that the Chief Hunters would consider the apprentices that were to go outside the tunnels more to get some battling lessons. Russetfall didn't seem too surprised at her thanks but she hear him reply and that was enough to know she was free to continue on. Lakebite followed behind the guard as he made his way back to the post he found for himself. She would have to meet him back here later and figured she might as well stow her prey close by. She rather have him fight off something that would try to dig it up anyways, making sure the cats in the tunnels was her first priority than her own life. Though she would be telling her sister Emeraldsong about this hunt. She was closer to Emeraldsong than she was to Berlydawn and Lakebite had a distinctly harsher personality than her sisters. She watched as Russetfall hopped back up on tree and she found a soft spot in the ground and dug a small hole her paws turning dark from the digging. Placing her catch she covered it quickly and moved around to the other side of the dead tree and moved away from where the fox had been. She tasted the air and all she could smell was fox, she needed to get further away. She looked at Russetfall and just shrugged she would have to move out away from this area and make her way back as the night went on. She moved quietly making sure she didn't step on anything that would make too much of a sound. Closing her amber orbs she listened to her surroundings trying to make out any sound that she could eat. She didn't heard anything. She moved along, as she moved the sky started getting lighter and she was unsuccessful. But there was one last opportunity, she could hear the high pitched squeaks, she looked above and there were bats flying around the area. Thats when she heard in the distance Russetfall call out for her. She bounded back towards him not caring if she stirred up the grass bugs were flying out from where she had moved and she noticed that bats would swoop closer to the ground. Which gave Lakebite an idea. "Before we go back I need you to do something." Her tone was blank and she crouched down and jumped on the fallen tree next to him. "Run down in the undergrowth to stir up bugs near this tree." She smiled wickedly at him "I hope your hungry for bats."Tags: Brave Notes: :/ this was better than my deleted one
